I am a retired academic with continuing scholarly interests as well as obsessions with politics and music in all its genres, but in particular jazz, blues, folk, and Canadian art music. A former 'cellist, I played the mandolin for some 50 years, in the latter ones favouring the "Mandoblaster", a five-string electric mandolin that resembles a half-size Stratocaster. Unfortunately, problems with arthritis in my hands have now made playing the mandolin impossible. I am currently focusing my attentions on writing a biography of my father, composer Robert J.B. Fleming.
