Dr. Kevin Schoenfelder
Dr. Kevin Schoenfelder, a distinguished orthopedic spine surgeon, recently concluded a 45-year career marked by exceptional contributions to spine surgery and patient care. Known for his meticulous approach and dedication to his patients, he has received numerous accolades for his surgical expertise and unwavering commitment to improving health outcomes. Born and raised in Minnesota, Kevin's fascination with the biological sciences led him to Macalester College in St. Paul, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Biology in 1974. Eager to delve deeper into genetics, he pursued and completed a Master's in Quantitative Genetics at the University of Minnesota in 1975. His academic achievements paved the way for medical school at the same university, where he graduated with a Doctor of Medicine (MD) in 1979, earning induction into the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honors Society due to his academic excellence. Following medical school, Dr. Schoenfelder's postgraduate education commenced with an internship at the University of California, San Francisco, spanning 1979 to 1980, and culminated in a residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of Washington, which he completed in 1984. His residency was highlighted by significant research accomplishments, including receiving the Best Resident Paper award. Kevin's commitment to education led him to a teaching role as an Instructor of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Washington. His expertise also brought international opportunities, including serving as a Traveling Faculty member at the University of Hokkaido in Japan in 1984 and completing a fellowship at the University of Hong Kong in 1985, where he specialized in spine and pediatric orthopedics. Dr. Schoenfelder's research significantly advanced the field of orthopedic surgery, mainly through his work on spinal fusion techniques and innovations such as the anterior fixation of spinal fractures using the Kaneda device. His scholarly work was frequently showcased at major medical conferences, including the Scoliosis Research Society. In 1985, Kevin transitioned to private practice at Puget Sound Spine Associates, later joining the Franciscan Spine Group in 2008, where he practiced until his retirement in 2018. Throughout his career, he was celebrated for his patient care. He consistently earned 5-star Patient Satisfaction Awards every quarter from 2008 until retirement, reflecting his deep connection with and compassion for his patients. Orthopedic surgery, mainly focusing on the musculoskeletal system, involves treating disorders that impair movement and stability. Dr. Schoenfelder specialized in surgeries designed to restore mobility and alleviate pain, greatly enhancing his patients' quality of life.
